| When we
reached the town of Mancos, we found that our turnoff towards the state
park was at the one and only stoplight in town. Imagine that! This
small town was big enough to actually have a stoplight! |

We only had
five more miles to go to reach the state park and the campground. At
about 6:30, we finally arrived at Mancos State Park. |
We stopped at the
entrance to the state park to pay the state park fee

then proceeded
into the campground and picked out a campsite. We were the only ones
there, so we had plenty of sites to choose from.
The campground is
divided into two parts - the main campground and the west campground.
The main campground is located at the bottom of the map, and the west
campground is located at the top of the map. Why this is called the
west campground and not the north campground, I'll never know.

The two
campgrounds have a combined total of 33 sites. The main campground is
further subdivided into two loops. The lower loop, containing sites 9
through 18, was closed off, so we only had 13 sites to choose from in
the upper loop. We arbitrarily chose site 8 and pulled in.
Our first chore was to set up the tent. The main campground is all in
trees. But we didn't have any trouble finding an open area to put the
tent.

We were warned
about bears in the area, and there were bear tracks in the clearing
where we set up our tent.

Our next
chore was to pay the camping fee and to take some pictures and get some
video footage while we still had some daylight left. Next to our
campsite on the road between sites 8 and 19, there was still a small
amount of snow remaining. |
