Our first stop along this loop was at one of these mesa top dwellings.

They call these Pithouses. A shallow pit is dug in the ground, then timber and mud are used to put walls and a roof over the pit. The entrance is through a hole in the top, with a ladder going down to the ground in the pit. These pithouses have one large room, and a smaller room called an antechamber.

Here, you can see the smaller antechamber at the far end.

It is not known what the antechamber was used for, but it is believed that, with the fertile ground in this area, the antechamber was used for food storage. This particular pithouse showed evidence of fire. Apparently this pithouse caught on fire and burned down.

We returned to the vehicle and proceeded to the next stop.

Here we can see one of the cliff dwellings along this loop, Square Tower House.

According to the information we got, this is one of the most photographed ruins in the park.
